Sony Vaio x505 review
![]() |
Although this is an older product some of the features are going to be seen again soon in the market. geekBlue decided to take a look back at this past product. "When Sony wanted to build the next generation of ultralight portables, it looked to the racing world. Sure, aluminum and magnesium alloy are awfully light. But carbon fiber is the choice of champions. So the designers went to work on what would be become the world's smallest, lightest notebook. At 1.8 pounds, the 1GHz Vaio X505 is a razorlike wedge of a notebook. Closed, it measures less than an inch thick at the back and less than half an inch thick at the front. The sleek, black finish of the nickel-reinforced carbon molding lends it a striking resemblance to a stealth bomber. But any super spy would easily choose this notebook as his weapon of choice, as it stows away neatly in even the smallest travel bag. ..." VaioX505 [MobilePC] More information inside article. "Open it up, and the X505 continues to charm. The 10.4-inch TFT screen looks surprisingly good from any angle, and its keyboard is astonishingly competent. People with stubby fingers will probably take a little time to acclimate to the slightly downsized keys, but we were impressed by the completeness and comfort of the layout. In place of a touch pad, Sony opted for an eraser-head TouchPoint to save space. While we generally prefer the space of a pad, this compromise makes plenty of sense here. The power cable is little by any notebook standard and, for that matter, so is the battery, which lives in the center portion of the hinge. Yet small size doesn't hinder this mobile PC's life span. It churned away for just shy of two hours in our battery tests, outlasting most other ultralights we've tested. The machine is powered by a 1GHz Pentium M processor backed by 512MB of RAM, which pumped out unexpectedly high performance in our benchmark tests. Where, for instance, Sharp's 4.2-pound Actius PC-AV18P rated a 97 in our Sysmark tests, the X505 earned a 98. And, more impressively, the X505 cranked up 45.5 frames per second in Unreal Tournament 2003 compared with the Actius's uninspiring 15. Chances are, you wouldn't want to play any shoot-'em-up games on an ultralight, but the X505 brings this into the realm of possibility.
