AMD and Intel - x86 64-bit Chips

"The chip war between Intel and AMD is heating up Monday with the release of competing x86 64-bit processors. Both companies are offering their latest round of chips designed for workhorse servers. Intel's has created a Xeon dual-core processor (DP) with 2 megabytes (MB) of L2 cache, code-named Irwindale, while AMD has' released a new Opteron series, including the 852, 452 and 252 chips. Each one has its own set of major OEMs announcing products as well as sales ties with many other leading system manufacturers worldwide. " [via internetnews.com]

Older article noted from geek.com from 2004 about the first "wars" with the 64-bit chips.

"Microprocessor Report analyst Tom Halfhill is claiming that Intel reverse-engineered AMD's 64-bit x86 extensions . Intel's 64-bit x86 extensions, which will be first employed in its Nocona processors later this year, are virtually identical to AMD's 64-bit extensions . Reverse-engineering a technology is neither illegal nor improper, and AMD has been reverse-engineering Intel's technologies for decades. Reverse-engineering has allowed AMD to effectively compete with Intel, despite having a much smaller R&D budget. This may be the first time that Intel has choosen to reverse-engineer an AMD technology, since Intel generally prefers to develop new technologies on its own. Although Microsoft states that its Windows XP beta OS is only for Opteron or Athlon 64 PCs, there is little doubt that Nocona will be able to run this OS just as well. This is good news for AMD since its 64-bit standard has clearly won. Unlike multimedia extensions , Intel and AMD are on the same page for 64-bit x86 extensions. " [via geek.com]
