Modix HD-3510 media player

Three articles below about the new Modix HD-3510 media player.

"The Modix HD-3510 media player converts any external hard drive you might have lying around (up to 2 TB) into a portable media library. Essentially just a tricked out USB hard drive case, the HD-3510 packs a dedicated chipset that supports nearly all video formats in addition to Mp3, WMA, and OGG audio. Connections on the back allow for hook up to the TV, monitor, or stereo of your choice, with a maybe-too-small display and button set up for file management built in to the front. The USB-only input doesn't exactly thrill, but at $240 for simple and portable media library manager, I might be willing to sit through the long, dark transfer time of the soul. " [via gizmodo]

External USB hard drive boxes are useful, but lack the ability to directly play video and audio data on a television; they require a PC. This means that until now, you always had to burn saved films or MP3 files on blank discs to be able to play them with a DVD player. But with the new Modix HD-3510 box, you can eliminate this step and play the files directly from the hard disk you installed yourself.

The IDE interface can handle disks of up to 400 GB, which means storage space for several DVDs. But the Modix HD-3510 can also play back DivX films, which means there's an almost endless playback time. The box is supplied without a hard disk, and its dimensions (5" x 8" x 1.75" or 129 x 205 x 45 mm, WxLxH) are no larger than a normal USB box. Weighing about three-quarters of a pound (350 grams) it could even be considered a lightweight." [via tomshardware]

"MPC recently discussed the Modix, which from the outside looks like a normal Hard Drive case.
The look is deceiving as a full Mpeg-Board is added, turning this device into an external HDD Case
and a DivX Media Player. The Modix HD-3510, made by the Korean Company Modix in White
or Black (As of march 2005). A wide variety of audio- en video formats are supported but unfortunately
WMV is not one of them. As with the iZak, also the Modix is capable of playing DVD ISO files stored
on the HDD and are recognized as fulle DVD's including Menu's and options. One strange fact on the
Modix is the Eject button (useless) on the remote control, which shows us that the Modix was initially
planned as a DVD External Casing with Media Player capabilities. The latest Bios update for the Modix,
only a few small issues are left to be looked at in the future but these are not really causing any headaches
during usage.

Tests on compatibility for differenct codes have shown that XVID is not played very well while DivX is fully stable.
This is considered a serious limitation as Xvid is one of the most popular Video codec's to date. All DivX-codec's up
to 5.2 cause no trouble. Once in a while, strange messages are shown which are not translated from Korean to
international languages supported but in general, the player delivers to what it promises to be able. The price you pay
for a unit is consider high, especially since there is no hard drive by default which has to be bought separately." [via mpeg-playcenter]
