Preventing Shopping Cart Theft With Wireless Brakes

A grocery store in Pennsylvania has installed wirelessly-controlled brakes on its shopping carts to reduce shopping cart theft, which results in an average loss of $3,000 per month. When a thief attempts to take the cart out of the parking lot, the right-front wheel will lock up as it passes over a burried antenna under the sidewalks. I don't know how effective it'd be, as only one wheel locks up, but still it's an interesting idea. Via
