SwitchBack Ruggedized UMPC

draft_839_big.jpg

Although the Panasonic Toughbook is probably the widest field-deployed ruggedized computer, that doesn't mean other companies aren't competing for a piece of the government pie. This Ultra Mobile PC [product page] from Switchback packs all sorts of goodies in its 5.5" x 7.5" x 2" magnesium and rubber housing. Features include a 1 GHZ Celeron M processor, 5.6 inch screen, Bluetooth, removable HD, and 1 GB of RAM. That stuff is standard fare nowadays, so what really impresses me is the ability for the system to run not one but four operating systems simultaneously. It also supports proprietary add-on sleds, which unlock all kinds of possibilities, from GPS to digital photography. Via
